VOLUNTEERING |

2-So what can you do about any of those things, you ask? The answer: You can volunteer.
3-Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people's lives, including your own. If you'd like to support a cause but can't afford to donate money, you can donate your time instead.
4-Volunteering isn't like school: Instead of having the choices made for you about where to go and what subjects to learn, you get to pick. You can choose what really interests you.
5-If you have a friend or relative who has or had a medical problem (like cancer, HIV, or diabetes, for example), you might be inspired to donate your time to help an organization that raises money for research, delivers meals, or offers other help to people with the illness. You can also:
- serve food at a homeless shelter
- volunteer to spend time at a retirement community
- organize campaigns against littering
- take part in a park cleanup day

Reading task: Volunteering |
There are currently more than 22 million people in Britain who work as volunteers for many different organisations. Many employers nowadays favour job applicants who have some experience of voluntary work and many young people appreciate this. Having some form of voluntary work on your CV can often improve your chances of getting a job. Some young people in the UK who take a ‘gap year’ before starting University use part of their time to do some voluntary work, whether in the UK or abroad. There is a week dedicated to all volunteers in the UK every year.
Read the following text about volunteering in the UK and choose the correct phrase for each paragraph.
Do you come here often? What's in it for me?Volunteering – for love?Benefit the communityWorking as a volunteer can help you to meet new friends or even find romance in unexpected circumstances.
Do you come here often? What's in it for me?Volunteering – for love?Benefit the communityDoing some form of voluntary work has never been more popular with British people. Over 20 million people were engaged in voluntary activities in 2013. Volunteering means giving up time to do work of benefit to the community. It can be based in the UK or overseas. Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) has long recruited people in the UK to fill usually professional roles in developing countries.
Volunteering can take many forms, from working with children with learning difficulties, in an animal hospital, or planting trees. When London won its bid to host the 2012 Olympics, up to 70,000 volunteers were needed to help ensure the games were a success.
Do you come here often? What's in it for me?Volunteering – for love?Benefit the communityVolunteers can be anyone of any age. Students and full-time workers often manage to squeeze in some volunteer work. But what motivates volunteers? Some do it out of a sense of altruism while others find they have free time available. But in this selfish age more are asking what they can get out of it. Some mention self-awareness. As Pukul, 28, who works in communications in Manchester, says, 'you're no longer doing it for yourself but for someone else'. Many mention the opportunity to get to know people they would not normally meet.
Do you come here often? What's in it for me?Volunteering – for love?Benefit the communityA relatively new phenomenon is the hope of meeting new friends or even a life partner through volunteering. In a recent survey 20% of 18-24 year-olds and 8% of over-65s said their love lives had improved since they began volunteering. ‘Volunteering is what speed-dating promises but never fulfils -a way of seeing a lot of truth about someone you've just met in a short a time as possible,’ says Mukta Das. The same poll found that nearly half of volunteers enjoyed improved health and fitness, a quarter had lost weight -especially those working with children or doing conservation projects -and two-thirds felt less stressed. So it seems volunteering may improve your life – you may even find the person of your dreams.

Read the following texts about environmental issues and fill in the gaps using words from the chart below. Write the words in the spaces provided:
damage | atmosphere | unleaded | cut | win | aerosol | coal | holes | extinct | poisonous |
desert | greenhouse | warming | solar | earth | fertilizers | acid | water | polluted | friendly |
The Ozone Layer The ozone layer is a layer of gas high above the surface of the that helps to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which can our skins and cause cancer. Scientists have recently discovered in the ozone layer, caused by substances called CFCs (clorofluorocarbons). CFCs are used in refrigerators, cans and in the manufacture of some plastic products. Some companies now make aerosols that do not contain CFCs, and these are often marked “Ozone "
Deforestation Rainforests help to control global because they absorb carbon dioxide. In recent years, large areas have been destroyed, as the trees are down for wood or burned to clear the land for farming. The burning releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the . Many rainforests grow on poor soils, and when they are cut down or burned, the soil is washed away in the tropical rains, so that the area may turn to . Many plants and animal species that live there could become .
Pollution Factories, power stations and motor vehicles pump large quantities of carbon dioxide and other gases into the air. This is a major cause of the effect. A lot of petrol contains lead, which is very and can cause brain damage in children. Most cars use petrol today and hybrid cars use batteries and petrol to use less petrol. Some poisonous gases dissolve in water in the atmosphere and then fall to the earth as rain. Acid rain also damages trees and buildings, and can kill fish in lakes and rivers. Rivers can also be by industrial waste from factories and chemical and pesticides used by farmers.
Alternative Energy Most of the energy we use today comes from , oil and gas. But these will not last forever, and burning them is slowly harming the atmosphere. We need to look for other ways of supplying energy. power is a way of using the sun’s energy to heat or to make electricity. We can also use power by building modern windmills that spin in the wind. There are several types of power: river water in mountainous areas can be used to generate hydroelectric power, and we can also create electricity from sea water flowing in and out with the tides. |
